Police not meeting UN benchmark

Letters

THE United Nations recommends that in law and order, a country should have a ratio of one police officer for every 400 citizens (1:400).
With a population of about 8 million, definitely 20,000 police officers should be on the payroll and located nationwide.
Unfortunately, that is not the case.
Our police force has fewer than 8000 officers on fully active duty and they are mostly located in the towns and cities of Mt Hagen, Lae, Rabaul and Port Moresby.
There is a valid reason; there is no institutional housing for them in the districts.
Can the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary present an institutional housing programme to the National Executive Council and ask it to approve the humanitarian assistance programme that is already with them?
Having at least 50 police officers per district will also attract investment opportunities.
NEC should approve the nationwide institutional housing programme for the police now.
Let’s not allow opportunities to go amiss because our country prefers loans more than humanitarian assistance.
