POLICE in Angoram, East Sepik, are investigating the shooting and robbing of a Vietnamese man during an armed robbery last month where 720 grams of gold worth about K144,000 was stolen.
The man is currently recovering with local police and Wewak criminal investigation division officers investigating the incident.
East Sepik police commander Chief Supt Albert Beli said the man was holding the gold when the suspects approached the camp.
“The seven suspects approached the camp at Jonomo (in Tamo-Keram local level government area) and held up two of the guards, wounding one of them with a bush knife,” he said.
Chief Supt Beli said the suspects left the two guards tied up and confronted the Vietnamese man and shot him before fleeing the scene with the gold and K4,000.
He said the alarm was raised and the injured man was rushed to a health centre in Angoram for treatment.
Chief Supt Beli said a report of the Sept 29 incident reached Wewak only last week.
Meanwhile, a six-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a vehicle near a lodge along the Kreer Freeway in Wewak.
Chief Supt Beli said the victim, from Masandanai, Karawari local level government, Angoram, was with her mother walking home from Kunai camp after watching a volleyball game when the accident happened.
A Toyota Land Cruiser, owned by a security firm that was allegedly speeding hit the girl.
“She died at the scene and the suspect, a 45-year-old man, was arrested on the same day and taken to the Wewak Police Station,” Chief Supt Beli said.
“He has been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.”
