Police take safety measures

POLICE in Finschhafen, Morobe, started their Christmas operations on Friday to monitor people and vehicle movements in an attempt to see to an incident-free festive period .
Gagidu police station commander Sergeant Taki Dewo said they would be monitoring all roads and sea ports leading into Gagidu to make sure the public were safe.
“We have grouped into three groups, one will monitor Pindiu and Sialum highway, Yabim and the third group will be stationed at the Finschhafen Urban LLG,” he said.
Dewo said at this time of the year people liked to go home for Christmas but criminals were also more active than normal to seize opportunities.
“That is why we want to make sure that sea ports and roads are safe for the travelling public,” he said.
Dewo said police would check all passenger boats and vehicles to make sure no illegal items were transported and that vehicles were roadworthy.
He police would also carry out awareness on homebrew and marijuana consumption in communities.
The operation will continue until Jan 7.
Funds from the Finschhafen district for the operation is yet to be released but police have engaged in it nevertheless.
Dewo said intelligence information claimed criminals from outside were targeting business houses in the district and police would be on high alert.
