Police urge organisers to involve them in events

IT is important for any event organiser in Port Moresby to seek police involvement to assure safety for participants, police say.
National Capital District and Central divisional commander Donald Yamasombi said his office had not sighted any request from the organising committee of Sunday’s Trukai Fun Run in the city where at least three attacks by thugs took place.
Yamasombi said he was surprised to read in the papers about attacks on the ambulance and The National senior photographer Ekar Keapu during the event.
The rascals tried to steal ambulance equipment.
“I am not too sure if the organisers had asked for police presence but it is important that police must always be notified to provide visibility in such big activities to avoid future attacks,” Yamasombi said.
He said there were no requests from organisers to his office.
“I would assume that may be the reason why there were no police presence and these people decided to take advantage of it,” he said.
He urged the companies and organisers of events to have the courtesy to seek police assistance to provide security for their events to deter criminals from robbing, stealing or attacking people.
Yamasombi said there were also past instances in the city where such issues had taken place.
