TWO policemen caught transporting 32 bags of betel nuts on the Magi Highway will face disciplinary action, according to Gulf police commander Inspector Silva Sika.
He said police manning a checkpoint caught the two police officers on their way to Port Moresby with the 32 bags of betel nuts.
Police confiscated the betel nuts and took the officers to the Malalaua police station.
The two officers explained they had bought the betel nuts from someone who was selling them for K20 to K30 a bag.
“I don’t know where they got the money to buy such a big number of bags of betel nuts,” he said.
He said the matter had been reported to police headquarters to deal with them.
“They were in uniform so I could not lock them up in the cell but kept them under police supervision until they travelled back to Port Moresby,” he said.
He urged police officers not to get involved in the betel nut trade along the highway and in Kerema town.
