THE finals of the Port Moresby Rugby Football League competition have been deferred indefinitely due to the ongoing general election in the nation’s capital, according to an official.
Games coordinator Meke Maino told The National yesterday that the finals were initially scheduled for this weekend.
“We completed all our games and were ready for the finals,” he said.
“But the current situation in Port Moresby has forced the board to postpone the finals to a later date.
“We’re concerned about the safety and well-being of the players, officials and supporters, so (league chairman) Dr James Naipo issued a statement notifying the clubs of the deferral.”
The league completed its regular-season rounds last weekend with 12 teams each in the A-grade and Under-21s, and seven women’s sides.
The 2022 season was shortened to just 10 weeks.
Maino said the top-eight men’s teams would advance to the finals while the women’s finals format was still under discussions.
“From the two pools, the top-eight teams will be announced once we finalise the points of the season for each club,” he said.
“The teams with the most points will advance to the finals. For the women, the board is yet to decide.”
