THE Port Moresby Australian Football League says preparations for next weekend’s Easter Cup are progressing well with Moni Plus confirmed as the sponsor of the inaugural tournament. League president Douglas Lai said the Cup would be contested in regional teams comprising Mamose, Highlands, Southern and New Guinea Islands (NGI).
He said the regional concept was aimed at prompting interest among more youths in the National Capital District. Lai league players would be slotted into their regional teams after the completion of the trial matches this weekend.
The first round of 12-a-side trial matches was held last weekend at the Colts Oval with Highlands impressing. Mentored by Jack Bola, Highlands beat John Timothy-coached Southern 9.2 (56) to 5.0 (30).
In their second match, Highlands eased past John James-coached NGI 12.3 (75) to 4.3 (27).
In the other match, NGI beat Mamose 6.1 (37) to 4.1 (25).
