NORTHERN Governor Gary Juffa had welcomed the commissioning of the K83 million Divune hydro-power plant as a step in the right direction for Northern in its plan to become a “green” province.
Juffa said the province planned to match the hydro-power capacity with a solar energy facility it is currently working on with an Israeli firm.
Prime Minister James Marape is expected be in Northern today to open five projects including the hydro-power plant.
“Once this facility is in use, the province can declare itself a green province,” he said.
“Its fuel sources will be purely based on renewable energy rather than fossil fuel which have been proved to be destructive to our environment.”
Juffa said the provincial administration would also have a modern office complex costing K14 million soon.
“All contracts were awarded through the newly-appointed Oro procurement board and work on most of the contracts is underway,” he said.
