Population growth a time bomb

Letters

MUCH has been said about people dying from curable diseases due to drug shortage or because the proper equipment is not available in the country.
Overcrowding in classrooms, rural-to-urban drift, prostitution, the increase in the number of street children, more infrastructures need to be constructed, employment growth rate at a snail’s pace, increase in poverty, more students are pushed out of the education system, increase in illiteracy rate and the list goes on.
This is a result of the population growing at an alarming rate.
It is a time bomb ready to explode at any time in the near future.
That will cause a catastrophe.
The rapid increase in population in a short period of time is the reflection of the nation’s poor control of its population growth.
Therefore, the Government must put its money where its mouth is.
The government must create a new ministry that can cater for the population.
It must make proactive decisions on child birth control and educate citizens on the contraceptive methods available or drafts policies that control how many children a couple can have (This may draw opposition from organisations such as churches).
The dissemination of educative and informative messages using electronic and print media or face-to-face education on the topic over period of time.
If such measures are taken then the population growth can be controlled and the government can achieve some of its goals, such the challenges of low literacy, quality education, low morality, reduction in poverty and many more.
