Port Moresby league kicks off

THE Port Moresby Rugby Football League (POMRFL) will kick-off its season on Friday on oval two inside the Oil Search National Football Stadium, according to an official.
The POMRFL board made the announcement on Thursday despite the venue management stating earlier this year that ovals one and two would undergo maintenance.
“We’ve approached them to come up with an understanding for them to tell us what’s happening to the field so that we can organise our competition at an agreed time but our partners at Oil Search haven’t come back to us,”
POMRFL junior vice-president Manu Lofena said. He claimed that the management did not fully specify the maintenance schedule which had caused uncertainty over the start of their season.
“POMRFL has always been running on this field undisrupted since 1949 (70 years),” Lofena said.
“It’s a premier league in the country and we don’t want to spoil that legacy
“The management only advised us that it would take three months to fix the field and they should advising about what is happening.”
Lofena said attempts to get a response from the venue caretaker’s board of trustees was unsuccessful.
