A COMPANY will turn Port Moresby’s waste into power to help support electricity supply to the city.

Landfill Energies Ltd director Del Smeeten signed power purchase agreements (PPA)  with PNG Power on Tuesday.

“We have already established talks with the National Capital District Commisison where we will get waste from the Baruni Dump site and then use it to generate electricity,” Smeeten said.

“We will use every form of rubbish and waste, except glass and metal objects.”

Smeeten said they were looking at getting waste and rubbish from surrounding areas in NCD.

He said on average, they would need about 25 tonnes of rubbish and waste a day, which Baruni Dump could not provide. “Baruni Dump can only provide about a tonne, thus, we are looking at getting rubbish from surrounding villages and suburbs.

Smeeten said they are looking at getting waste from the Port Moresby General Hospital to meet their  demand.

“What we’re doing is getting any waste products and materials that nobody likes and turn them into clean and green energy to use.”

The K40 million project will be completed in 2017, and will generate 2MW of electricity to support PNG Power’s supply to the Port Moresby grid.

“Our project will help manage the city’s waste, provide renewable clean energy and at the same time provide income-earning opportunities for people in the provision of waste to us,” he said.
