THE Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea’s (BFPNG) historic visit to Kerema, Gulf, yielded exceptional results in terms of participants in their basketball, three-on-three, coaching, and referee clinics.
One of the female participants, Eau Hae, shared her story on how it inspired her to pursue her dream of becoming a referee.
“During the programme, I felt empowered with the responsibility of officiating a basketball game,” Kerema resident Hae said.
“I believe there is no junior female referee in our town and my dream is to become the first Fiba- licensed official from Kerema.”
BFPNG visited Kerema and organised Basketball for Good programmes that invited everyone in the community to participate.
The 22-year-old also discussed what she learned from being able to participate in the clinic.
“You have to be confident and sure of your knowledge to become a good referee and it was during the programme that I saw how the moderators carried themselves with confidence,” Hae said. – Fiba
“It was very inspiring for me and I wish to have that confidence one day.”
BFPNG chief executive Nick Daroa shared his excitement about having Hae on board as a potential referee from Kerema.
“We are always on the lookout for future technical officials because it gives the games more credibility with knowledgeable referees,” he said.
“We will be in communication with the Kerema Amateur Basketball Association and Hae on the possibility of continuing her journey as a junior female referee for their association.” – Fiba
