Province must set up own teacher’s college

IT is not surprising to read Robert Raim’s letter, “Probe all private teachers’ college” (The National, Feb 29) regarding the establishment of private teachers colleges throughout Papua New Guinea.

These views are genuine and the Department of Education must take immediate action to stop this flourishing of these colleges.

I also support the suggestion that these private colleges must be fully investigated.

The owners of these colleges are not genuine about teacher education and training.  Their primary aim is to make money in the pretext of providing this vital service.

If the department does not take action then it is equally responsible for the downfall in education standards and quality.

I am concerned about such activity in Eastern Highlands Province.

Are the Provincial Education Board and Teacher Education Division of the Department of Education and the relevant stakeholders aware of this?

Have these colleges sought approval from government authorities to meet the required standards to establish teacher training schools?

I also call on the Eastern Highlands Provincial Government to establish a teachers’ college to cater for elementary and primary teacher training.

Other provinces have teachers’ colleges and I can’t see any reason why EHP can’t have its own.

It is a sad to see students from EHP fronting up at other Highlands teacher training institutions to enrol for teacher training.
