Australian Football League Papua New Guinea (AFLPNG) conducted its third free coaching course this year in East New Britain, with 11 males and 8 females completing the orientation for the AFL coaching certificate at Pilapila Primary School on Friday.
East New Britain development officer Kayly Kelson and AFLPNG volunteer Ben Vile taught the basics of the sport to the participants, most of whom were primary school teachers.
“It was good to have the school sport teachers here to learn how to coach youth athletes on the basic skills and rules of AFL. It is important that athletes learn the correct technique of the game,” Kelson said.
The certificate involves learning the rules, scoring, kicking, handball, marking, bouncing, umpiring, coaching and leadership strategies.
Pilapila Primary School teacher Kulungas Taut was particularly interested in the leadership session.
“We watched a video discussing the power of an individual to create change if they stand up and lead by example with positive actions. It really inspired me.”
