RAMU Golf Club has a junior development programme going for 45 youngsters, instilling discipline and ethics on and off the field besides skills of the game in them.
Club captain Eric Wise said the club had invested in various junior development programmes through training and competitions around the country involving the 45 players.
“We’re seriously involved in junior development in weekly and monthly competitions as well as sending them to national challenges in Kimbe, Lae, Port Moresby and Mt Hagen to play,” Wise said.
“It is important to learn skills of the code, ethics and discipline.”
Among 40 senior golfers in the club are 11 women, mostly employees of Ramu Agri Industries Ltd (Rail) and companies at Gusap Downs.
Wise said Rail had an 18-hole course nestled along the green Gusap Downs which was handy to Madang, Morobe and Kainantu.
It recently hosted 150 golfers from around the country for the annual Ramu Challenge and with Puma Energy as the monthly medal sponsor, the game has received a timely shot in the arm.
Puma Energy territory manager-Mamose Lameck Bae said building a partnership with Rail was worthwhile in sponsoring golf apart from supplying fuel, and the new bond was crucial for the future.
