Rugby bodies planning to merge

PLANS are underway to merge Capital Rugby Union (CRU) and National Capital District Rugby Union (NCDRU), according to an official.
CRU president Kori Chan said in a statement yesterday that the merger was part of Papua New Guinea Rugby Union’s (PNGRU) restructure for one union per province.
He said merger was important leading up to PNGRU’s annual general meeting (AGM) which would be held in Port Moresby on Saturday.
“We have been developing the game in Port Moresby with the addition of two clubs for a total of 10 clubs with five divisions,” Chan said.
“We plan to develop the game in the 2022 season through a proposed merger and collaboration with NCDRU.
“The merger had been in the planning stage for several years until CRU was advised by PNGRU that the merger was required so that there was one union per province.
“CRU and NCDRU have yet to commence discussions, but we are aware that it must happen following this AGM. It will be good for rugby union in the nation’s capital and for the country.
“The proposed structure will help create a pathway for grassroots rugby union which will focus on increasing playing numbers whilst improving and maintaining quality.”
Chan said CRU had nominated a team comprising candidates from Mamose, New Guinea Islands, Southern and Highlands.
