Sad day for PNG when govt seizes PNGSDP

Letters, Normal

I REFER to PNG Sustainable Development Program Ltd (PNGSDP) which is making the news lately.
It is another sad day for PNG with the government attempting to seize control of the PNGSDP.
In the first place, the company was established by BHP Billiton in good faith and for the benefit of the people of the Western and PNG as a whole.
Opposition leader Honourable Sir Mekere Morauta explained why the trust fund deliberately set up (The National, Oct 26).
1. To ensure the people of Western have access to services after the mine closes;
2. To use the fund for the development of Western; and
3. A national fund for development of projects anywhere in PNG.
When the government gets hold of the company, the question I ask is: Will it meet the terms as outlined?
The way the government is behaving has left a big doubt in my mind.
There are so many trust funds being established.
The government should use these trust funds to upgrade, improve, renovate, refurbish and replace all our existing health and education facilities and equipment which are falling apart, broken down, useless and outdated.
They should be used to upgrade and repair roads which have become pig tracks.
These trust funds should not be left floating around.
