ALL police officers are now covered under an insurance scheme effective from last Friday.

This follows the signing of an agreement between Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga and Asia Pacific Insurance Brokers Ltd in Port Moresby.

“This insurance policy initiative funded by the Government is the first of its kind for the police department and would cover all police personal in uniform and civilians with all their spouses,” Kulunga said.

Kulunga said the first payment of K2 million to the insurance company meant all police officers and their spouses would have insurance cover.

He said the insurance cover would cater for injuries and deaths plus other areas as well.

Company chief executive officer Robert James Ralewa said the insurance cover provided to the police department had unique features tailored specifically for government organisations such as the police.

Ralewa said one of the features was its cover of HIV/AIDS and police officers who were single mothers.

He said HIV/AIDS would be covered at a rate of 25% for the first year and 50% for the second year.

He said single mothers in the force were often overlooked in insurance policies.

Ralewa said other features included funeral benefits, cash benefits and cover for police officers up to the age of 65.

It is part of police plans to modernise the force.
