TWO top-performing secondary schools in Lae on Monday received support from their district development authority (DDA) to help improve their infrastructure.
Lae MP John Rosso was on hand to present the schools with cheques for K200,000 each to Lae and Busu secondary schools.
He said his DDA was also supporting Bugandi Secondary School with some funds from the district services improvement programme (DSIP) to help with its administration.
Rosso, who is also Minister for Lands and Physical Planning, said Lae Secondary School with its latest receipt of funds had now received a total of K500,000 during his term in Parliament. He said Busu Secondary School would also receive the same amount in total with another K300,000 yet to be given.
Rosso said the aim was to assist all secondary schools in Lae with money from the annual DSIP funds.
He assured schools that had not received any money from the DDA that they would be considered as soon as funds became available.
Rosso said Lae’s schools were struggling to accommodate the large number of students with some secondary schools having as many as 60 to 70 students in a class.
He said he wanted to reduce that number to between 40 and 50 by helping schools improve their capacity.
