VILLAGERS at Yimas in the Karawari local level government, Angoram district, East Sepik, are looking for international buyers for their eagle wood.
Karawari Eagle Wood Company director William Maki said people in the village were looking for buyers, adding that for 20 years they depended on the sale of eagle wood for their livelihood.
“We are more interested in buyers from Europe, Middle East and Japan,” Maki said, adding that eagle wood was a cash crop on high demand in the world market.
Transporting the product to the market in Wewak is difficult because of the poor road condition from Angoram to Wewak .
It takes villagers two days to travel by boat or dugout canoes up the Sepik River to Angoram government station.
Maki said A grade eagle wood could be sold for K300/kg, B grade K250/kg, C grade K200/kg and D grade for K150/kg.
The seedlings are going for K30 each.
