A COURT last week sentenced a man to six months in prison for being in possession of marijuana in Lae.
Lae District Court Magistrate Tera Dawai ruled that Timox Sevet, 31, from Finschhafen district, Morobe would serve a six-month suspended sentence on a good behaviour bond since he was a first time offender and had entered an early guilty plea.
Sevet is a boat (outboard motor) operator from Labu village along the Huon Gulf coast.
Police prosecutor Nandalyn Kaoro told the court that Sevet was in the company of two other men at Lae’s Aigris Market when police arrested him.
Police on patrol in the area spotted the men, who acted suspiciously when they saw the officers.
The men were stopped and searched and two rolled marijuana cigarettes were found in the accused’s trousers pocket.
The accused was then taken to Voco Point police station where formal charges were laid against him and he was detained.
Magistrate Dawai told the accused that if he reoffended during the period of his good behaviour bond he would be imprisoned.
