SEVEN suspects have been detained over the death of a man during a drunkard brawl at a cemetery in Daru, Western, acting South Fly police commander Insp Soiwa Ricker says.
He said the men were accused of beating up the deceased after an argument at Bamu settlement on Sunday.
Insp Ricker said the body of the victim, in his late 30s, was at the Daru General Hospital morgue.
Insp Ricker said the deceased had been drinking since Saturday and had joined two groups over the course of the two days.
“He started drinking with his friends at Bamu settlement after one of them bought alcohol from the shop,” Insp Ricker said.
“After finishing drinking with the first group of friends, he (deceased) then left and joined another group of friends who were drinking home brewed alcohol at the cemetery and continued to Sunday.”
Insp Ricker said an argument broke out leading to a fight, resulting in the death of the victim at around 11am on Sunday.
He said relatives of the deceased attempted to loot the shops that two suspects were employed at but police stopped and dispersed them, saying the death had nothing to do with the businesses.
