THE 28th SP Sports Award was launched in Port Moresby yesterday with nominations for outstanding 2019 and 2020 achievements now open in 13 categories.
The annual event was suspended last year due to Covid-19.
SP Brewery corporate affairs manager John Nilkare said this year’s event would be different as it would be staged virtually via EMTV and social media.
“Last year, like all other businesses, SP Brewery was significantly affected by Covid-19,” he said.
“We couldn’t generate enough (revenue) and because of that, we couldn’t invest.
“This year, we are happy to come back and rebuild the 28th (edition of the) awards.
“This year, we’ll be recognising sporting achievements in 2019 and some of the federations that ran their competitions in 2020, so it’s going to be combined.
“When we did a launch this time last year.
“We received some nominations, but the event was cancelled.
“For this year, we’ll re-do those nominations for 2019 and 2020.”
Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee president Sir John Dawanincura thanked SP Brewery for their continued support in recognising PNG sporting achievements since 1992.
He also made mention of Team PNG’s performance which saw them finish second in the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.
“SP Brewery has been a strong supporter in recognising PNG’s sporting achievements since 1992 and we thank them for extending their support,” Sir John said.
Nilkare said nominations would close on April 7.
