THE Steamships Trading Co (STC) has become a platinum sponsor of the Westpac Women in Business awards.
As sponsors of the public sector award, Steamships group accountant Mary Handen on Wednesday presented a cheque for K20,000 to Westpac (PNG) Ltd risk manager Olive Whippy.
Handen, who was the 2009 winner of the Westpac Women in Business, private and corporate sector award, said Steamships was proud to be part of the awards because they recognise the achievements of Papua New Guinean women.
“As sponsors of the public sector award, we are pleased to be able to shine the light on the hard-working women in the public sector of this country,” she said.
Handen said Steamships has been operating in the country for more than 90 years and promoting gender equality in the workforce had been and continued to be a priority for the company.
She said the company continued to train and nurture its female employees so they were able to take on managerial roles within the company and being part of the awards is a testament of its efforts in promoting women in both the public and private sector.
Whippy thanked Steamships for its sponsorship and said the awards were aimed at lifting the profile of women and assist in establishing networks that supported women in reaching their goals.
The awards comprise of one overall winner and a winner in each of the five separate categories: PricewaterhouseCoopers private and corporate sector award, Steamships public sector award, SP Brewery entrepreneur award, Trukai community responsibility award and the IBBM young achiever’s award.
