Stop blaming prostitutes

Letters

YESTERDAY’S front page of The National was horrible, a 24-year-old woman was gang-raped, beaten and left to die and social media was flooded by ‘holier than thou’ Christians who condemned her and said that she deserved the treatment for practising the trade.
Goodness! And we call ourselves Christians?
Even Jesus had mercy on Mary the prostitute, and allowed her to come to him so who are you ‘Christian Papua New Guineans’ to condemn a prostitute?
The issue here is that she was gang-raped, beaten nearly to death and all you can think of is your self-righteousness.
What sort of hypocrites are we as a nation?
Where are all these human rights fighters and women rights advocates?
Is this woman not human too?
It is funny that we find time to condemn someone who was almost killed for trying to make ends meet.
Prostitution is here to stay, it’s a fact that everyone has to accept sooner or later.
We don’t know why they chose to do this, but they are fellow human beings and should at least be given rights as well.
And as Christians, aren’t we supposed to love one another? Love our neighbours?
If we cannot love people who are like them than how can we beat our chests and call ourselves Christians?

  • Stop blaming Women, its men that put demand so the women are doing marketing. Shame on you men. Over powered by lust of your flesh and went and buy few hours excitement and now you all trying to be by Mr & Mrs Perfect. They have their own reasons for doing it. Larim ol meri toktok lo point of view blo ol. ALL MAN SHUT UP!

  • Every job has it’s own risks, whether it be a pilot, logger, driver, doctor etc…
Being a prostitute is no different to any other profession.
There are risks involved with prostitution and the job is can be dangerous at times. Regardless of all the risks involved, people will continue to take risks to earn a living. For example, drug dealers. They know that dealing drugs is against the law and there are risks involved, but if there is a demand (market) for drugs, people will continue to deal, likewise, if there is a demand for paid sex, women will continue to sell sex. If men stopped paying for sex, there wouldn’t be a market for sex workers anymore. Men who pay for sex, also have their reasons. There is no one to blame here. Both men and women are contributing in one way or another to the sex trade.
For the poor lady who was brutalized by those men, my heart goes out to you. You knew what the risks were. You knew what the dangerous were, yet you choose to ignore all the risks associated with your job.
From this experience, You now have a very good reason to stop selling sex and find alternative means to survive. You may not be lucky the next time.
    Thank you
