Street kids and beggers

Letters

WHENEVER there is a visit of important or high-powered delegations from other countries, we want to pretend that we don’t have any problems, especially with our socio-economic wellbeing.
While there are some things that we must do, such as cleaning and beautification, there are others that we should not disallow or interfere with.
I’m referring to poor and vulnerable people struggling for survival on a daily basis.
One such case is street kids begging at traffic lights and elderly and disabled people who sit in the streets collecting cash and kind for survival.
These are the realities of the current socio-economic status of this country.
Who knows? After the visitors observe what is happening here, they may find ways to help us address the problems.
By pretending, we achieve nothing.
Let us show the international community that we have street kids and beggars here as much as do other Third World countries.
Port Moresby being the capital is also an indication of what is happening in other centres.
