Strong leadership, shared history behind Vitiaz success

STRONG leadership and the shared history of playing together has been at the forefront of Vitiaz United’s growing success in the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League, says team manager Rogena Strach.
Strach told The National that although they were newcomers in competition, the team comprised players from their local club (of the same name) in the Port Moresby Soccer Association.
“We do a lot of trial and error and why the team is faring so well is because we’ve got good leaders and we have a good captain who leads the boys on and off the field,” she said. “Just like every other team in the NSL that’s recruiting good players, we’ve done the same thing with clubs in Lae and these boys are not new to the club but they play for our team in PMSA.”
Meanwhile, Strach clarified that the club was a Port Moresby-based franchise despite a majority of players in the team coming from Morobe.
“We are a Port Moresby team and I know there’s a lot of talk going around that we’re a Lae team,” she said.
“We just haven’t come out and cleared the air on that and we don’t represent any provincial team.”
