A GRADE eight student in Lae was ordered by a court to pay K300 or face six months in jail for having possession of illicit spirit (homebrew).
Steward Tobias, 20, from Menyamya, Morobe pleaded guilty for being in possession of homebrew yesterday.
When asked by Magistrate Tera Dawai of the Lae District Court about his plans for the homebrew, Tobias said: “I completed my grade eight exam and wanted to celebrate at home so I went and bought it.”
Tobias told the court that he did not open the homebrew or drink it when police nabbed him.
Dawai told Tobias that he had a long way to go in his education career and completing grade eight was just the first step and not the final step.
“Such illegal things will destroy your future and even end your life,” Dawai said. “You have grade 10, 12 and tertiary level of education to complete before you can celebrate your hard work in school.”
