Students not acting as intellectuals

Letters

EDUCATION simply means the process of imparting knowledge, skills and judgments, either formally or informally.
Being in a country were such knowledge and skills are lacking and cannot be attained informally, we attend to schools to be formally educated.
Is our education system genuinely fulfilling its purpose to educate people to become good citizens?
Or is just another habitat for breeding fools?
School children today are different from the past.
Their behaviour can easily make one question their purpose of going to school.
I guess it’s because of an ethical breakdown in parenting or the absence of the good old corporal punishment we used to have back then.
Kids today go to school but instead of putting into action what they learn, they get themselves entangled in peer groups which encourages arrogance, addiction and bigheaded behaviours.
This issue is almost in every learning institution.
I am part of a higher learning institution and I tend to notice this issue almost every day.
Swearing comes out almost so easily in every conversation kids have.
We drink and party like fools. We complain about how poor the meal is.
The country is experiencing a lot of issues and it needs intellectuals’ interventions and insights.
But the intellectuals that are supposed to help this country move forward are complaining about food.
The higher institutions are built to educate people to use their brains, not to satisfy one’s desire to supply their type of food.
Seeing the way we the so-called intellects of the country behave and conduct ourselves gets me wondering about what the future holds for us. Though we can brag about our success in passing through all the levels of education systems, but if we cannot practice what we learn, we are nothing but a bunch of intellectual fools.

  • That’s is happening to students all over the country, I think it’s the absence of the good old corporal punishment.
Corporal punishment brought up law abiding citizens who are now adults who are wiser and can see the difference in past students and students today who will be tomorrow leaders.
I don’t know what kind of of leaders the will become

  • No wonder we have some many liabilities in workplaces today simultaneously unemployment, scientific literacy, math literacy and general English literacy are quite low comparatively.

  • Don’t blame the students. They are only doing what our leaders are doing in parliament…
    Remember the phase…”follow the leader?”
If the leaders are leading by a poor example and nothing is been done about it, why can’t the students follow them?

It all starts at home. Good Parents…better children
