PORT Moresby Suburban Rugby League has warned all clubs to field women’s team as per Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) requirement.
League president James Paul said it was vital that the clubs adhered to the governing body’s requirement as it promoted gender equality and further development to women’s rugby league.
“Women’s rugby league is recognised throughout the country as it plays an important role in delivering key messages on violence against women and girls in communities,” he said.
“The Oil Search Papua New Guinea Orchids (national women’s rugby league team) have set the benchmark and female participation is important to continue our international programmes.
“It also presents an opportunity for our grassroots women and girls from the settlements where the majority of players reside.”
Paul said a representative team will be selected to play in the provincial championship in August against other National Capital District leagues that were affiliated to PNGRFL.
“We all should take ownership and refrain from criticism and negativity towards the women’s competition,” he said.
“Our women deserve more respect and recognition in our competition and other leagues throughout the country.
“This is not an offseason competition and we all should change our attitude to raise standards in rugby league and life in general.”
