THE deadline for the registration of players and affiliations of teams taking part in the Port Moresby Suburban Rugby League competition is next Wednesday (April 27), according to a competition executive.

Competition vice-president Noel Mapa made a final call on the 14 clubs and new teams, who wished to join the competition, to complete their affiliations fees at the earliest as only a few had registered so far.

He said since the competition was set to kick off next Friday, prompt payment of fees would give the executives ample time to fix the competition schedules and other arrangements.

“We are hoping to start the competition soon but that only depends on the completion of the club and the player registrations,” Mapa said.

“If that doesn’t work out well, we will postpone the start of the competition.”

“Teams should know by now that without their players’ and club registration, they will not be eligible to compete in this year’s competition.

“Rugby league in the city engages the youths, especially the boys, from taking part in illicit activities. Therefore, I’m urging the team managers and sponsors of the respective clubs to make it their responsibility to affiliate their clubs and register their players as quickly as possible.”

Mapa said the PSRL board was aiming to set a standard in running this year’s competition more professionally.

“That is the reason why the fees are set at K500 for clubs and K50 for players. These monies need to be paid so that we can finalise arrangements with the PNGRFL through the Southern Region Confederate.”
