ASSISTANT Police Commissioner (Northern) Peter Guinness has urged five inmates that escaped from a moving vehicle in Lae to surrender voluntarily or the law would deal with them.
The families and relatives of the escapees were also urged to report to police any contact with the escapees and get them to surrender to the law enforcement.
“Any prisoners that escapes from police or CS custody is breaking the law and so are relatives who harbour them,” Guinness said.
Buimo prison commander Supt Fidelis Kaski denied that 30 high risk inmates had reportedly escaped from a moving vehicle while being transported to the Lae court house on last Monday.
Kaski said all prisoners had been accounted for during the morning cell inspections and the situation was normal.
After the morning inspection inmates scheduled for court hearings in town were was sent off.
However, Morobe police commander Supt Alex N’Drasal told reporters during a festive season operations press conference that several high-risk prisoners had escaped at Kamkumung when the door of the transport vehicle broke loose.
Lae acting Met Supt Chris Kunyanban confirmed that five prisoners escaped from a locked police vehicle as they were being moved to court house.
“One was apprehended after being hit by a car,” he said.
“He is okay and was transferred immediately to Buimo after treatment.”
Meanwhile, Guinness appealed to citizens in the Northern command – Morobe, Madang and Eastern Highlands – to celebrate the festive season in peace and not partake in risky or dangerous activities and urged business houses to take extra precaution.
