Teach cops empathy

Letters

POLICE cadets need empathy. I was walking by as shop on Monday at Boroko, Port Moresby, when I witnessed a man assaulting a woman.
Those of us that were in the area surrounded the two and started yelling at the man to leave the woman alone.
A few minutes after, a police 10-seater pulled up in front of the post office and two officers walked towards the crowd.
The first officer walked towards the crowd and stood with the rest of us watching the guy assaulting the woman.
The other officer followed his colleague and told him that they had to go.
He took one look at what was happening and the two walked away.
Neither one of them made an attempt to stop what was happening or take the two to the police station.
What kind of officer who is in full uniform leaves a woman to defend herself against a man twice her size?
If that wasn’t bad enough, the first officer had the nerve to yell back towards the crowd: “Ol fight lo dinau” (They’re fighting over money).
Is this really happening.
Are you really going to make fun of a situation like this?
A uniformed police officer is ignoring an act of assault happening right in front of his and is instead making fun of a woman whose face is covered in blood as a result of being punched repeatedly?
Aren’t police officers supposed to protect and serve?
Hasn’t Police Commissioner David Manning spoken out countless times against gender-based violence?
It doesn’t matter who was in the wrong, this issue could’ve been sorted out at the station.
The two officers were just careless.
They had no empathy.
Most of our police personnel lack empathy.
I didn’t stay to see what had happened to the poor woman but I hope the rest of the crowd that were with me were able to get them both to the station.
Something the two officers failed to do.
