TEAM Melson Trading dedicated Friday’s Prime Minister’s Golf Challenge victory to captain Tom Kevin’s baby daughter who passed away on Wednesday due to heart complications.
“I’ve dedicated this win to my daughter Watilla Tom, she was one year and five months old at the time of her passing,” Kevin told The National at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club.
“I left for Port Moresby on Wednesday morning and later that afternoon, I was told that she passed away in Wabag.
“She had complications as a newborn so she would usually get sick.
“While the pain of losing her kept gripping me, I knew she was at peace because she had been through a lot.
“I train and play golf on the side to help raise extra money for her medical expenses.
“I was hurt and didn’t know what to do since I was already in Port Moresby but I kept telling myself that my coming here would not be for nothing.
“My team were very supportive so I made sure to give my best for them.”
Meanwhile, Kevin thanked their sponsor Melson Trading for the opportunity to compete in the challenge, which is aimed at helping raise funds for Team Papua New Guinea.
“The challenge in Port Moresby was a special one for all of us despite what we went through during the week,” he said.
“We got to meet the prime minister (James Marape and take home the title, so that’s something we will remember.”
