THE Capital Rugby Union (CRU) men’s sevens team say they are ready to compete in the inaugural Kumul Petroleum Papua New Guinea Rugby Union Super Sevens Series which kicks off on Saturday.
The tournament will be held at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium, Port Moresby, over the next four weekends.
CRU coach Frank Gabi told The National yesterday that he would count on Papua New Guinea Pukpuks pair Emil Latumahina and Debe Tore in their quest for the top prize of K50,000.
He said he was happy with the 20-man squad that they had selected from trials held a fortnight ago at Bava Park.
“I am happy with the team that we’ve selected,” Gabi said.
“We held selection trials on Good Friday and finalised the squad immediately.
“Our training only started last Monday. Preparations have been good so far.
“We are mainly focusing on getting the basics right at training, since we only have two weeks to prepare. There are many new faces in the team and I am looking forward to seeing how they perform.
“We have some experience players in Emil Latumahina and Debe Tore whom I believe will step up to lead the side.
“Both were national representative players in previous years.
“So it’s good to have them.
“There is one player from Valley Hunters, Jezreel Waking.
“He is a great sevens player and I’m keen to see him play.”
Gabi said his side would not underestimate other teams.
“We are expecting a strong challenge from other provincial unions as they play more sevens tournaments than we do,” he said.
“There are teams like Kimbe Rebels and Lae who have been great in sevens over the years.
“I wouldn’t say we are favorites, but I’d like to think we have a good chance of reaching the finals.”
