East New Britain police commander Snr Insp Joseph Tabali said the suspect and two other teenagers had allegedly used the guns to shoot at people in Vunatagia village.
Tabali said the other two boys who escaped were known to police. All three are from Vunatagia village in Kokopo.
He said police were informed that the boys had been causing trouble in the village and headed there where they arrested Ruben.
They also discovered the guns that Ruben had in his possession – a homemade gun and a WW II 303 riffle.
Tabali warned the public that police would “come down hard” on trouble makers and criminals during the state of emergency (SOE).
“Police will still trace them down and arrest them during this time, so they must behave and remain in their homes as per the health authorities’ instruction.”
He said East New Britain has been quiet during the SOE period and the coronavirus people had been listening to the orders issued by the SOE controller and authorities in the province and that was a good sign of fighting the deadly coronavirus.
He said police continue to do road checks to remind people to practice social distancing and when travelling. He said the Covid-19 team in the province was carrying out awareness to educate people to observe health and safety measures during the SOE.
