KAPAKAMARIGI Primary School, in Bena, has become the first primary school in Eastern Highlands, to benefit from the Digicel PNG Foundation’s roll-out of double classroom structures throughout the country.
Funded at a cost of K200,000, the steel prefabricated structure double classroom includes an office space, 40 new double school desks, a water tank, two pit toilets and two bucket showers for female students.
The Digicel Foundation has so far launched four elementary school classrooms in the province and Kapakamarigi is the first primary school to benefit from the infrastructure roll-out.
Kapakamarigi Primary School is situated in the Unggai-Bena district, 15km outside Goroka town.
The school serves three LLG council wards, covering over 3,000 people.
Established by the colonial administration in 1958, Kapakamarigi Primary School is a level four lower primary school with more than 300 students and 12 teachers.
The school has eight classes from Grades 3-6 and, despite the run-down state of the school, the community is involved in the school’s upkeep.
Kapakamarigi board chairman Bob Side said: “Our mission is to strive for quality education to equip our children to become useful members in their respective societies and Digicel Foundation’s funding of a double classroom is a big boost. We are most grateful for your generosity.”
Digicel Foundation chief executive officer Marina van der Vlies said they were delighted to have provided the structure to the school and to the local community as they had shown they were well organised and committed to their children receiving vital basic education.
The Digicel PNG Foundation supports remote communities and their schools like Kapakamarigi by providing them with better educational resources to become even stronger communities.
