THE National Capital District Rugby Union (NCDRU) hosted the first round of matches for its 10-a-side competition at the Murray Barracks Oval in Port Moresby on Sunday.
NCDRU competition director Sailosi Druma said the eight-week competition was aimed at bringing clubs together for some rugby before the end of the year.
“We cancelled our 15s season this year but we wanted to get the clubs involved and at least have some games for the players to enjoy themselves,” he said.
“It’s only going to be 10s rugby for eight weeks so at the moment, we have eight senior men’s teams, four women’s teams and eight Under-23 teams.
“The women’s division is comprised of one Capital Rugby Union side.
“We also have a few Papua New Guinea Cassowaries and Palais players taking part in competition to keep themselves fit.
“There are also four Defence teams — two from Murray Barracks and one side each from Goldie and Taurama Barracks.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t get teams like Royals, Spartans and Saints this year but we’re happy with the numbers we have.
“We’ve got a lot of youngsters getting into it and that’s the whole purpose of the competition.”
Druma said there would be no finals but the competition would instead use the points system to award the top teams at the end of the eight weeks.
