Union vows to toil on despite pandemic

DESPITE the challenges brought on by Covid-19 this year, Papua New Guinea Rugby Union (PNGRU) says it will continue to work with provincial unions (PUs) to roll out programmes and competitions this year.
PNGRU’s interim board said in a statement that the focus for the code was to develop domestic competitions through provincial unions while strengthening the game’s administrative functions.
“Although unfortunate, the setback of Covid-19 has given a chance for us to re-assess and reset the direction for rugby in PNG,” it said.
“The importance of strengthening the game domestically has never been more evident but in doing so, we must take ownership of the challenges that lie before us and share the responsibility to overcome them. PNGRU will remain steadfast in ensuring that PUs develop into robust associations that adhere to good governance and best practice.
“Strong and progressive PUs will provide the grounds for continued and increased funding (from sponsors and World Rugby) for our development and competition pathways.
“PUs that are administratively sound will be better positioned to work alongside PNGRU to establish sustainable programmes that maximise the safety and welfare of everyone who participates in rugby union.
“We look forward to working with you and all our stakeholders in what will be a challenging and exciting year for rugby union in PNG.”
Meanwhile, the board said several of the PNGRU programmes may not be conducted this year due to the uncertainty of the Covid-19 situation in the country.
