MANY people contracting the Coronavirus (Covid-19) and also dying from it in Madang have not been vaccinated prompting the need for more awareness, an official says.
Madang health authority acting public health director Dr Martin Damien told The National that during the current surge, 558 cases were recorded taking the total to 1,225 cases.
There are 30 Covid-19-related deaths.
In October, 78 Covid-19 patients were admitted at the Modilon General Hospital, with 33 discharged and 24 deaths.
“From Nov 1 to 8 there were 12 admissions with three deaths,” he said.
“Morgue space is not adequate.
“We will have a new 20-foot freezer to alleviate the problem.
“Vaccines are available and is voluntary. Vaccine acceptance rate or coverage is still low at 7 to 8 per cent.
“Many people are confused and fearful of the vaccines due to misinformation.
“A lot of advocacy is needed.”
