Vaccine stops outbreak: Doc

THE integrated measles-rubella vaccine administered in the last round of the nationwide polio campaign prevented a measles outbreak in PNG which neighbouring countries currently have, an official says.
The World Health Organisation country representative Dr Luo Dapeng said measles was a highly infectious disease caused by a virus that spread through coughing, sneezing, close personal contact or direct contact with infected nasal or throat secretions.
“It spreads quickly among young children and kills more children than any other vaccine-preventable disease,” Dapeng said.
“Any person, young or old, who has not been immunised, can be easily infected by measles.”
