Village eroding fast

Letters

THIS is in regard to the letter by Peter Kopa in The National on Thursday concerning a small village at the bank of Markham River Bridge. It is true the river is eating away banks along that stretch of the river (west side) and this is due to the construction of barriers on the eastern side of the river.
However, that section is also along the Bulolo Highway and it is considered a buffer reserve and most people that reside along that stretch of the river are squatters with few local people.
The road further up is also at risk.
Despite that, there are construction barriers down the river on the eastern side further down the river and the river is eating the banks on the western side.
My prediction that in a few years, a section of Labu Butu village at mouth of the river will be eroded.
You can clearly see that by assessing past and present satellite images in Google Earth.
Something has to be done on both sides of that river.
