Volunteers must not ask for cash

I AM against this handful of volunteers demanding the government to fulfil their voluntary services with cash incentives.

I don’t think this group which came out in the media directly represented the majority of the Pacific Games volunteers.

Firstly to retract, the word volunteer itself is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote goodness or improve human quality of life.

In return, one achieves the feeling of self-worth and respect.

There is no financial gain involved for the individual or group.

Papua New Guineas across the length and breadth of this nation are humbly grateful to the volunteers for  the time and effort you have provided in staging this event alongside officials and service providers and all stakeholders in participation.

Without your immense commitment and dedication the Games would have been half successful.

No doubt the populace is so proud of you for a great job well done doing your duties with pride.

However, it is somewhat disgraceful and shameful for the handful bunch of volunteers demanding monetary reward for their services.

You are only controverting the pledge you initially signed up for as volunteers and making a fool of yourself .

Thus, not only that setting a very bad precedent for this country when future big events are hosted and volunteering service will be desired.

You should be patriotic and humbled by given this once in a lifetime opportunity as thousands of genuine citizens missed out during the volunteering selection process.

This experience should pay homage to your family and friends and dawn as a significant inspiration for you participation in the Games, considering this sporting spectacle may return to PNG in 24 years’ time.

All volunteers have won gold for your colossal efforts.
