A WANTED suspect was captured at the Kimbe General Hospital on Tuesday night after trying to rescue a wounded gang member shot by police during an armed robbery, West New Britain police commander Chief Insp John Vosivai says.
Chief Insp Vosivai said the suspect, who had been on the run for allegedly killing San Remo nightclub owner Jeremy Poh in December 2019, was involved in an armed robbery in Kimbe on Sunday.
“He was among eight other suspects armed with homemade guns when they robbed a Chinese shop at Kisere,” he said.
“They removed three cash tills and some mobile phones and escaped in a PMV using the passengers as human shields.”
A lone policeman pursued the robbers but could only watch them escape as they were among passengers in the bus.
The officer alerted members of the mobile squad and they pursued the PMV to Gigo-Laleki settlement where the PMV was abandoned and the suspects fled on foot.
Police shot and wounded a suspect and brought him to the hospital while the rest escaped.
Chief Insp Vosivai said the suspect wanted for killing Poh returned to the hospital to get medical supplies for his other injured gang members as well as rescue the wounded suspect at the hospital.
He was spotted by a police guard at the hospital and captured and detained at the Kimbe Police Station.
Police have stepped up security at the hospital and advised pharmacies and health centres and private medical centres to report any one trying to purchase medicines without prescriptions.
