Morobe Wawens are ready face Kutubu in their opening Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL) fixture at the National Sports Institute in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, tomorrow (3pm kick-off).
Club president Andrew Namuseh told The National yesterday that he was banking on the team’s spine to get Wawens off to a good start.
“Utility Kenneth Pilailo, Ferdallas Namuesh (defender) and goalkeeper Jason Bendi have (Oceania Football Confederation) Champions League experience,” he said.
“Our players only came into camp on Monday after NSL was confirmed for kick-off this weekend.”
Namuseh said the addition of 24-year striker Joshua Panget would also add power in his side’s attack.
He said the bulk of his players were rural rookies from Mamose and Highlands.
“We have selected 23 players for this season but we’ll look to cut that number after the first two or three rounds,” Namuseh said.
“Players who take the field have to perform to keep their spots or else get dropped because we have so much depth in the squad.”
Namuesh also confirmed that national coach Bob Morris had signed with Wawens and former Besta United boss Harrison Kamake would be engaged by the club as a mentor.
