Week-long Governor Ginson Saonu Cup tournament ends

A WEEK-LONG Governor Ginson Saonu Cup tournament hosted by the Ngasuapum Sports Association ended on Monday with the grand finals in women’s volleyball, mixed dart and men’s soccer competitions.
The tournament attracted the young and old alike as the sportsmen and women played their hearts out.
In the men’ soccer competition, 35 teams spread across eight pools with three pools comprising of five teams and the other five pools with four teams each.
In the third place playoffs, Highway 16 team two beat Dast Pawa 2-0.
The two goals for Highway 16 (2) came from Mathew David who plays for National Soccer League franchise Vitiaz FC.
The grand final between Orog Sangra and Zif from Zifasing started well with both teams displaying some good touches and enterprising football that kept the crowd of villagers and the visitors enthralled.
The game went down to the wire with neither team finding the back of the net in the first half even though the strikers from both sides had opportunities to get on the scoreboard.
The second half was more physical and both sides desperately searched for a goal.
With a couple of minutes remaining, luck went Orog Sangra’s way with a direct penalty inside the box awarded after a Zif player gave away a handball while trying to defend the his goalmouth. Orog Sangra’s Judah Bill made no mistake as he kicked the ball past Zif’s goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead that was maintained until the final whistle.
Orog Sangra claimed the cup and K3,000 while Zif pocketed K2,000; Highway 16 (2) received K1,500 and Dast Pawa got K1,000.
The women’s volleyball and the mix darts results were not announced as the finals were still in progress, however, The National understands that the women’s volleyball winner was to receive K2,000, the runners-up K1,500, third place K1,000 and fourth place K700.
For the mixed darts, the winner received K2,000, runner-up K1,500, and third and fourth received K1,000 and K700 respectively.
