Western starved of development

Letters

GEOGRAPHICALLY, Western has a big land mass and is the biggest province in the country, but is mostly covered with swamp and wetlands and is one of the least developed provinces.
There are no volcanic threats, deep valleys or stiff mountains to climb, especially in the Middle Fly and South Fly electorates.
Why is it so hard then to take development to these parts of the province?
Even though the province is richly blessed with the OK Tedi mine, which is in the North Fly electorate, why are the two leaders of these electorates not working together to bring tangible development to the people?
The only developments or changes taking place are in the North Fly electorate where the mine is situated.
OK Tedi mine assisted the latest quake victims in Southern Highlands with K50 million. One wonders how much of that money was spent on its own people along the Fly delta who also suffered from the effects of the earthquake.
Building of roads and bridges in the lower plains of Western will bring changes.
People living in these rural areas just need basic services delivered to their doorsteps.
Air services is another setback in the province. Airports and airstrips in the province need to be upgraded. At one time there where mission-run airstrips in the rural areas but they are no longer in operation.
Why can’t the services be brought back into operation to help the remote rural population who have missed out on basic services?
A lot of planning is needed to bring changes, but do our leaders have the vision? We need visionary and outspoken leaders.
Can the governor get his MPs to work together and come up with a vision for Western?
The people of Western are tired of listening to court battles over mismanagement and misappropriation by our leaders.
Are we waiting for foreigners to run our province?
