Wife-beaters get 36 months

 THE Kokopo District Court, in sentencing two men to 18 months imprisonment for assaulting their wives, while reminding them that their wives were not punching bags.

Magistrate George Kerker sentenced the two – one from Gunanur in the Toma Vunadidir LLG and another from Taui No.1 in Bitapaka LLG this week.

Kerker told the two men that their wives had equal rights and demanded equal respect from male counterparts in the community.

He reminded the two men not to resort to using their fists but to be man enough to talk things through using mediation and counselling.

The court heard that the man from Taui reportedly bashed his wife in front of their manager at the workplace, causing her to bleed heavily, the man from Gunanur cut his wife’s tongue.
