THE Hagen District Court has ordered a woman to pay her husband K600 and a pig valued between K1000 and K1500 from their daughter’s bride price payment.
Mel Kekep took his wife Mon Konga to court for unfair distribution of money and pigs after he was given K200 and a pig from the K20,000 bride price payment of his adopted daughter.
Magistrate Donald Joseph yesterday upheld a decision made by Negil village court in Mul made last year for Konga to pay Kekep K600 and a pig worth between K1000 and K1500.
When squashing the appeal filed by Konga, he told her that it was a slap on the face of Kekep with what was given to him.
Joseph told Konga that if she was genuine enough, she could have given more to her husband for raising their adopted daughter.
The court heard that the couple adopted the girl when she was an infant from Konga’s family.
Konga and Kekep raised the girl and when Kekep married another woman, Konga and the daughter returned to her village.
Kekep told the court that he did not divorce his wife, she ran away to her village but he looked after her and their daughter.
He told the court that as an adopted father, he was disappointed with what was given to him.
A village court magistrate, Papa Dai, told the court they made a decision last year for Konga to pay
her husband K600 and a bigger
pig as what was given was not enough.
Joseph said K200 and a pig was unjustified and dismissed the appeal filed by Konga.
He ordered Konga to pay K600 with a pig worth between K1000 and K1500 and also pay K200.
He told her to pay a total of K800 with a pig April 11 at Negil village court area witnessed by court officials and community.
Failing that she would be arrested and sentence to six months at Baisu jail.
