THE Capital Rugby women’s sevens competition kicks off this weekend with two more teams joining this season.

Premier clubs Defence and University re-join the competition adding a bit of flare to this male-dominated sport which is now gaining popularity among the women.

University will be under the watchful eyes of former Pukpuk Paul Josephs, while Defence has Sydney Wesley as head coach.

While no notable names have been released by the two teams, both are surprise packages.

Players will be out to catch local selectors’ attention for a spot in the capital team for the national titles scheduled for next month.

The national titles will be used to select the PNG Palais team.

The eight teams to do battle are champions Spartans, Brothers, Harlequins, Nova, Defence, Southern Chiefs, University and Wanderers.

Spartans are pitted against Harlequins, Nova and Defence in pool A while University, Chiefs, Brothers and Wanderers in pool B.

CRU’s match coordinator Billy Rapilla said the competition will be used to select a side for the national seven’s tournament. The finals will be played on March 23 with the championships slated for April 1-2.
